Pertussis Immunization Rate
The Question: How does a pertussis (whooping cough) epidemic influence the pertussis immunization rate?
The Study: In September 2012, there was a pertussis epidemic in Washington state. The rate of children current on their pertussis immunizations was evaluated from the previous September (2011) and would be calculated the following September (2013).
The Results: There was no difference in the rate of children up to date on their pertussis immunization for any of the three time periods.
Comment: This result is quite disappointing. If epidemics of a preventable disease won’t convince parents of the benefits of immunization, what will?
