The Question: What’s the impact of maternal dairy intake during pregnancy on childhood allergies?
The Study: In this study from Japan, the dairy, calcium and vitamin D intake during pregnancy and the incidence of allergic disorders of 1,354 mother–child pairs was determined. The children were 23–29 months old. The allergic disorders included eczema and asthma.
The Results: Higher maternal intake of dairy products, cheese, yogurt and calcium was associated with a reduction in the incidence of eczema and asthma in their offspring. Higher maternal intake of vitamin D was associated with an increased incidence of infantile eczema.
Comment: This study is a reminder that everything a pregnant woman eats may affect her developing child. It also reinforces that excessive vitamin intake may be detrimental to health.
