Recall: August 6, 2009. Dorel has recalled approximately 31,500 stair gates because the hinges that hold the gate in place can break and pose a fall hazard to children if the gate is placed at the top of stairs. There have been no injuries reported.

The recalled item is the Safety 1st SmartLight Stair Gate, model number 42111 (printed on sticker under handle panel). The gate was manufactured before December 20, 2008 and is white metal with a grey handle and motion sensor nightlight.

The stair gates were sold by mass merchandise and juvenile product stores nationwide from January 2005 through July 2009 for $60.

What to do: Stop using the gate immediately and contact Dorel for a free repair kit.
