Vacuuming Dander

Vacuum cleaners with HEPA (high-efficiency particulate arrest) filters are sold as the best way to reduce airborne allergens from cat dander. The manufacturers of these high tech vacuum cleaners claim that, short of getting rid of the cat, they are the best way to lessen cat dander.

When the vacuums with HEPA filters are compared to those without, in airtight experimental chambers, the HEPA-equipped vacuums out performed those without the filters. However, when compared in a real world situation Ð vacuuming a home Ð no differences in effectiveness were found. Both types of vacuum cleaners actually increased the amount of cat dander in the air.

The best way to lessen cat dander is to get rid of the cat. If that's not a consideration, any good vacuum cleaner will do. There's no reason for cat owners to buy an expensive vacuum with a HEPA filter.
